Feds Investigate 400,000 Ford Trucks For Brake Failure

The Ford Motor Company, the second largest auto-manufacturer in the United States, is currently being investigated by the Unites States government in regards to issues with faulty brakes in trucks between 2013 and 2014, The Detroit News reported. About 420,000 Ford F-150 pickups with 3.5-liter, six-cylinder engines manufactured between 2013 and 2014 could potentially be prone to break failure, which is a very large and dangerous problem for drivers.

The report that brought this issue to light explained that so far, there have been over 30 complaints, some even stating complete brake failure. Four accidents have also been reported, but no injuries have been linked to the issue. Ford F-series pickup trucks are the top selling car model in the nation and the F-150 accounts for a very large bulk of those sales, so this may leave a lot of drivers at risk.

Massive Sinkhole Damages Detroit Road

A massive sinkhole has taken out almost two lanes on Tireman Street in Detroit, Michigan’s west side, The Detroit Free Press reported. The unusually large sinkhole was caused by a failing sewer pipe underneath the street, though it is still unknown why the sewer pipe failed. To remedy the situation, workers will send a camera down, into the pipe, to see what caused the breakage, fix the breakage, and then fix the road. Until then, drivers will have to avoid the area. Luckily, no reports of sewer leakage or backups in homes have been reported so far.

This sinkhole comes as a surprise to Detroit residents who have been experiencing an overall kind winter. The unusually warm temperatures have been kind to Detroit sewer workers, but accidents like this are a haunting reminder of the polar vortex two winters ago, in which the workers had to handle more than 2,000 water main breaks. City officials are urging drivers to use caution in the Detroit and Metro Detroit areas in case there are any more road issues.

How to Prevent Slow Winter Weather Travel Time

This winter has been very unpredictable in a number of ways and it appears that Mother Nature isn’t quite done with us yet. Flint In Snow-Emergency Mode After Winter Weather

MLive reported that Karen Weaver, the mayor of Flint, declared a snow emergency earlier this week due to worsening conditions in the area. This state of emergency, which was extended through Thursday, February 25, 2016 at 6 PM, made it illegal to park cars on city streets to ensure that city plows could take to the streets as easily as possible. Extra snow removal crews were also out and about in Flint helping the regular crews clear roads and helping any individuals who may be in need of assistance.

  • The normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to ten seconds. This increased margin of safety will provide the longer distance needed if you have to stop.
  • Know your brakes. If you have anti-lock brakes (ABS) and need to slow down quickly, press hard on the pedal-it’s normal for the pedal to vibrate a bit when the ABS is activated. In cars without ABS, use “threshold” breaking, keeping your heel on the floorboard and using th ball of your foot to apply firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal.
  • Don’t stop if you can avoid it. There’s a big difference in the amount of inertia it takes to start moving from a full stop versus how much it takes to get moving while still rolling. If you can slow down enough to keep rolling until a traffic light changes, do it.
  • Don’t power up hills. Applying extra gas on snow-covered roads just starts your wheels spinning. Try to get a little inertia going before you reach the hill and let that inertia carry you to the top. As you reach the crest of the hill, reduce your speed and proceed down hill as slowly as possible.
  • Don’t stop going up a hill. There’s nothing worse than trying to get moving up a hill on an icy road. Get some inertia going on a flat roadway before you take on the hill.
  • Stay home. If you really don’t have to go out, don’t. Even if you can drive well in the snow, not everyone else can. Don’t tempt fate: If you don’t have somewhere you have to be, watch the snow from indoors.

Metro Detroit Physician Sentenced To 45 Years For Health Care Fraud

DETROIT, MI - Think you may be a victim of health care fraud? Well you aren’t the only one. A prominent Metro Detroit physician was recently sentenced to 45 years after he was found guilty of prescribing chemotherapy treatment to thousands of patients without probable cause.

The once prominent physician, Dr. Farid Fata sat in a courtroom in downtown Detroit last summer awaiting sentencing for over-treating, under-treating and mistreating hundreds of patients in addition to insurance fraud. Expert witness Robert Sobieray, a former patient of the doctor and present at the hearing, described the treatment the doctor recommended for his supposed “metastatic bone cancer.”

Associate professor, Dr. David Steensma of Harvard Medical School and cancer physician testified for the prosecutors stating, 

“I’m not sure what they thought they were radiating.”

Sobieray, who was misled about the side effects of the chemo drug, Zometa, stated in front of the U.S. District Judge Paul Borman’s court during the sentencing last summer:

"I have one tooth left. I had to have pieces of my gums and teeth cut out."

About 22 victim's statements were read last year. Some called Fata an “evil monsters” and others dropped his credentials saying he no longer deserved the title of “doctor.”

Fata, a married father of three, plead guilty back in September of 2014 to one count of conspiring to pay and receive kickbacks, 13 counts of health care fraud and two counts of money laundering. Federal prosecutors said Fata had over 500 victims and has collected millions of dollars.

The hearing, which began on a Monday went on for a week with hundreds of victims giving their statements. Prosecutors aimed for a 175 year sentence but Fata’s attorneys fought for just a 25 year sentence. Fata received 45 years.

"One question was asked over and over, 'How was Dr. Fata allowed to get away with this?' In the pending civil litigation we hope to answer that question and hold accountable everyone who played a role in this epidemic of medical malpractice." said the personal injury lawyer who represented several of Fata’s victims in civil court.

State of Michigan to See Potential Speed Limit Changes

A committee within Michigan's House of Representatives approved a package recently that would allow for a change in speed limits in rural areas ABC 10 of the Upper Peninsula reported. This would raise the speed limit for cars on highways to 75 miles per hour and larger trucks to 60 miles per hour. Some in the House oppose this shift for a number of safety reasons, including many of the areas mentioned needing new asphalt, higher risk of accidents, and a swing in costs due to the higher number of potential auto accidents.

It appears that these fears are not unwarranted, especially considering the large amount of data that is available about automobile accidents. in 2012, the U.S. Department of Transportation found that of the 33,561 auto fatalities, 30 percent of those were speeding related. This statistic is even higher in earlier years. These numbers get even higher when alcohol is mixed in, reporting that in 2012 over 40% of speeding drivers had BAC levels of .08 or higher, compared to only 16% of drivers who were not speeding. Texting and Driving: New Police Technique Foils Law-Breakers

Police in San Antonio have a new tactic for catching violaters of texting and driving laws, Fox 29 of San Antonio reported. On certain roads and highways police are now using spotters on city buses to catch drivers texting behind the wheel. This new technique places people on buses in communication with police throughout the bus route to try and catch people violated the law that started in 2009. The department issued 40 citations in only two and a half hours, and they even let some drives go because they did not have enough police in the area to give out all the citations.

New techniques such as this are popping up around the country and they are really helping cut down on texting and driving accidents and deaths, which are still a huge problem for drivers of all ages, but in particular young drivers. A recent study shows that 40% of teens say they have been a passenger in a car in which the driver used a cell phone in a way that put themselves and their passengers in danger, Huffington Post reported. In 2013 over 340,000 accidents were reported that cited texting and driving as a factor in the incident. On average, 9 Americans die every day due to distracted driving, including disturbances such as texting or general cell phone use.

Automakers Recall 5 Million Vehicles Worldwide Due to Faulty Airbags

Continental Automotive Systems, an automotive electronics supplier based in Hanover, Germany, announced recently that a faulty part lead to the recall of over five million vehicles worldwide. The Detroit Associated Press reported that moisture may leak into the airbag control computer, causing the power supply to corrode and potentially fail. So far, Honda, Fiat, Chrysler, and Mercedes have issued recalls on vehicles dating as far back as 2006. Honda reported two car accident injuries last year due to the issue.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, frontal airbags reduce driver fatalities by 29% and fatalities of front-seat passengers who are 13 and older are reduced by 30%. Essentially, airbags are cushions which inflate when a vehicle crashes to prevent the occupants of the vehicle from hitting the interior and also prevent objects from outside of the vehicle projecting into the vehicle to harm the occupants.

As of 2013, over 39,000 lives had been saved by frontal airbags.

Detroit Ranks 110th in Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report

Detroit landed itself in 110th place for the year of 2015, according to Allstate’s yearly Best Driver Report, a list of cities in which you are least likely to experience a collision in. Out of 200 cities, Detroit was right in the middle, ranking 110, falling six spots from 104 in 2014, and falling a few more from 101 in 2013. Detroit has remained roughly in it’s current position for the past decade, but experienced a large drop from its perch in the top 30 from 2007 to 2008, falling from 25 to 163 in just one year.

Canton Resident Records Motorists Running Neighborhood Stop Signs

A concerned Canton resident began taking things into her own hands, recording drivers running stop signs in her neighborhood, WDIV Detroit reported. The resident explained how people cut through her neighborhood to avoid the traffic on Ford Road, but this causes issues because unlike Ford road, the corner of Hanford Road and Willow Creek Drive is in a residential neighborhood with people out and about and children playing. This creates a very dangerous environment because of motorists not following traffic laws, someone could very easily suffer an injury from a car accident.

Canton, Michigan are asking for anything to fix this issue, anything from speed bumps to blinking lights, so their kids can be safe in the neighborhood. One resident even stated that he considered moving to another neighborhood because of the traffic safety concerns. Although there hasn’t been an accident at this particular corner for five years, police are enacting a selective enforcement plan to monitor the area for two weeks to attempt to gather statistics to fix the issue.

Ann Arbor Biker Fights Ticket, Wins

Tim Panagis was ticketed for ‘impeding traffic’ in June when he was pulled over by a Michigan State Trooper, a ticket in which he would later fight, and win, The Detroit Free Press reported. A video surfaced online after the incident showing Panagis riding just to the left of the outer white line, being pulled over, and telling the officer that he did nothing wrong, getting ticketed, and being told to ‘tell it to the judge,’ which he eventually did. The Livingston County Circuit found in favor of the biker, explaining that the rules of the road are that bikers are not forced to ride on the shoulder, just close to the edge of the road, which Panagis was doing. The case shows that as a biker, and a driver, you need to know the laws of the road and that our police officers are not incapable of making mistakes.

Man Killed In Lenox Township, MI Crash

On Friday, December 18, 2015,  around midnight a man was a victim of a head on crash when he was on his way home on 26 Mile Road at Place Road in Lenox Township, Michigan.

According to CBS Detroit, the injured female was "initially trapped" until help arrived.  Fire crews had to help her escape from the seriously damaged car. Reports indicate that the woman suffered injuries, but is in stable condition after visiting a local hospital.
